Year 1 Assessment: Literacy and Numeracy Checkpoints

These short assessment resources may be used in February, June and October when monitoring children's progress and making judgments about achievement of targeted Literacy and Numeracy Indicators.

A trial of the Year 1 Literacy and Numeracy Checkpoints in 99 schools was completed in 2010. An external evaluation was conducted and recommendations for improvement have shaped the revision of these resources.

The Year 1 Literacy and Numeracy Checkpoints align with the expectations of the Australian Curriculum v.3 in Literacy and Numeracy.

In 2012, Year 1 teachers may choose to use the checkpoints to monitor children's achievement of the targeted literacy and numeracy indicators, as part of their whole-school assessment plan.

The QSA will continue to develop tools for monitoring literacy and numeracy in the early years, in collaboration with the three school sectors.

Data analysis assessment record

Teachers use the data analysis record to monitor children's progress against the Year 1 Literacy and Numeracy Indicators throughout the year. Analysis of the data will inform planning for teaching, learning and assessment.

February checkpoints

The February checkpoints target both literacy and numeracy indicators from the Prep Year. These assessments have been aligned to the revised Literacy and Numeracy Indicators and the Australian Curriculum v.2.

June checkpoints

June assessments target both literacy and numeracy indicators from Year 1.

Numeracy

October checkpoints

The October checkpoints target both literacy and numeracy indicators from Year 1.

The QSA is currently working to align assessment and work samples for the October Checkpoints to the Australian Curriculum.

Work samples

Annotated samples of evidence are provided to help teachers identify how children may demonstrate the targeted indicators. They describe the rich teaching and learning contexts within which evidence is collected. Each sample includes a teacher's analysis of how the evidence demonstrates the targeted indicator.
